G T Jones Contracting delivered a successful reinstatement of a riverbank slip in Aberdare for Edwards Diving Services Ltd

G T Jones successfully completed another stone walling project, this time working alongside Edwards Diving Services Ltd (EDS) at Gadlys Pit in Aberdare.
The project involved the reinstatement of an existing riverbank following a significant slip, which had affected the stability of the bank and required a carefully planned programme of excavation, ground stabilisation and river wall construction.
Working closely with Edwards Diving Services, G T Jones undertook the excavation and preparation of the affected riverbank in a series of controlled stages. This approach allowed the necessary soil-nailing works to be completed safely before progressing with the construction of the new river wall.
Once the bank had been prepared and stabilised, our experienced team constructed a substantial block stone river wall, incorporating concrete bedding and carefully compacted backfill to provide a robust and durable replacement for the slipped section of the riverbank.
A key feature of the project was the use of large locally sourced block stone, with individual stones averaging approximately 6 tonnes. The stone was supplied by Trefil Quarry, helping to provide a high-quality and durable material while also making use of locally sourced aggregate and stone.
Works commenced at the end of July, with the original programme allowing 13 weeks for completion. Through effective planning, close coordination between the project teams and the hard work of everyone involved on site, the works were completed on the 3rd of September – well ahead of the original programme.
The completed stone wall provides a substantial new retaining structure to the affected section of riverbank, reinstating the are following the slip and providing a strong, long-term solution.
Projects such as this rely on close cooperation between all parties involved, from the initial preparation and ground stabilisation through to the placement of the large block stone and completion of the wall.
